Thanks for looking it up. As I said... ignoring works best while emigrating to a remote place. *g*
Static... that's a nice advice, but it would involve watching the game and that's the last thing I want to do. Especially on my birthday, which is my day. I'll spend it the way it is fun for ME.

As it looks now I will make it indeed easy for them. I'll ask for the TV being turned off at coffee time and retreat after that (probably voluntarily offering to skip the barbecue). Instead I will search someone to spend the evening with. OUTSIDE, which means cinema or a bar visit. Maybe even dinner in some kind of restaurant. I will just stay the entire evening away, although the game and the comments might only take till seven or maybe half past seven. Duh... their problem. I will simply flee from home. They do not meet my expectation of this "family day", so I do not feel bound to fulfill theirs. No matter how. Still this entire incident leaves a very bitter taste behind whenever I hear about the championship. It always reminds me and makes me avoid it even more than before. As Jarod said... avoiding and keeping mouth shut. I have learned my lesson in that respect.

"A time to make friends" is the official FIFA slogan in English, I looked it up :)

Well I guess as unfair as I think your parents are when they know you don't like football, I guess you have to - like we all - just wait til it's over. What can we do, anyway, except trying to ignore it as good as possible. The one reason "It's only every 4 years, and only this year in Germany" is a good one, we have to admit that. However, it's only this year you have your n-th birthday, don't cha.

You could always sit next to them and root for the other team all game long, Its just about the most evil thing you can do to a football fan, every time you gloat there self esteem goes out the window but since you dont enjoy football counter gloats just go unoticed which just anoys fans to no end.
Ok so its a bit evil but thats what id do if my birthday had been overshadowed by something as daft as football :)
That or rig the TV so it didnt turn on :)

Well they are not so bad after all as it seems in my post, but I am still quite upset about it. We can simply not talk about it. I am not really sure, which game it is even. Whether still preliminary or already part of the finals. I just don't get it, why it is so freaking important to folks like my parents.
I am thinking about maybe meeting someone else from work or so on the evening, because I cannot really stand football. Shall they watch it, but I still hate it. I hate the championship for taking place in this country.
I wonder whether it is really the sense of those games, which are even called "A time to make friends" or similar (I wonder whether that was the official translation, Jarod), to make the friendly citizens, who shall be the hosts in this period, go mad and think about emigration to Uranus or something. To a place far away, where no football exists.
Someone please borrow me a sailboat and I will retreat to Kap Horn or the Arctic. Feel free to join me! ;-)

The funniest thing about all this is even that I am not alone with my non-interest/dislike. Germany is closing in on some kind of extraordinary state of affairs and most people I know are trying to ignore it and avoid it as much as possible.
Others are extremely convinced that 7 out of 10 people are football fans and look forward to it. According to my experience that cannot be true, so I also wonder why they take themselves the right to turn Germany kind of upset down, although many people don't like it.
Just that my parents have proven one thing (at least for me): Compromise impossible!
If others are like them (and I even consider my parents as normal TV watchers, not even hardcore fans), we are in for the hell of being until it is over. I count the days... my countdown is not for when it starts, but for when it ends!

I completely agree with your first post, Jarod. Unfortunately. We should found the non-WM watcher's club or something. Just a little private experience I recently made concerning that topic. It made me wish first time to be back in Jena (continuing to study or whatever) and not being here instead.

My parents also complain about the massive advertising etc, but they are going to watch the games. For me, who is not interested in it at all, it s**** like hell.
Even worse.. it lead to a major clash in our family yesterday, Reason: The German team plays on June 20th. Oh... and I am "selfish" btw, for those, who do not know yet.
Selfish, because I wished for about three months now that my parents do not watch football on this particular Tuesday. Instead I just wished to have a nice barbecue that evening. Yesterday I was thinking to do a full scale work job (12 hours from 8 am to 8 pm). If I am called somewhat selfish, I was trying to be non-selfish and offering my parents to skip my birthday this year, because of the championship and go to work instead.
They screwed my entire birthday... already. Of course they said that it was a joke, that they are going to skip the barbecue, but heck... it did not sound like that!
Coffee and cake with family before the game stars (TV already running) and maybe barbecue after the game.
When I protested and dared to say that they could maybe leave the TV turned off on my b-day... I was told I would have b-day every year, the WM is just all four years, never again in their lifetime in Germany and the next would be in Afirca anyway, so they cannot watch it. I have to stand back behind... literally. Because I did not want to, I was called selfish. The German team plays.
For the first time within the last five years or so, I ran into my room and slammed the door. Way to the WM... anyone got a worse story?
I would never do it, but you can guess, which thoughts ran through my head yesterday.
I HATE the championship!!!!!!

Just think... some football players make more cash in a month then most people make in 5 years.

I cant even beging to imagine what i could not acomplish with those resources at my disposal. Thats my main gripe with football i guess. Footballers make more cash then some small countries and yet they have no vision on how to use there cash in any positive way.

I once had a long conversation about national pride with a workmate. It's still a difficult topic here in Germany, and while we both agreed that it shouldn't be anymore, he had the opinion that everything was okay by now while I think you should hold back when it comes to respecting the minorities that suffered so much from the German regime. However, national pride in football, now that's actually the _only_ reason I can partly understand. Saying 'Stupid Netherlands won't win anything' has a satisfying ring to it, even it means next to nothing, especially to me ;)

Then again, why do I have to feel the same like the Footie Hordes (tm) in the first place. But anyways, besides the breathtakingly obtrusive security measures (German army active in their own country? Pleaaaase.), the privacy issues, the you-name-whats, the inescapable commercial campaigns drive me crazy the most.

I tried watching footbal once on TV. portugal was playing some other country, watched for about 30 min and almost fell assleep.
For the life of me i still dont understand what the fuss is about, people screaming and crying over a bunch of dudes kicking a ball arround... i mean what's so interesting about that ?

Told that to a friend once and he asked me "dont you have any national pride?"
Still trying to figure out what that's got to do with anything :)
